"Alternative Weekend in a Detroit Nursing Home" - Student Essay
My name is Kim Jun Hwan. The most important part of my volunteer experience was
that it made me remember my grandmother. We went to a nursing home on Saturday
afternoon, and I met an old woman, Raygun. I was surprised because she was 103
years old. In addition, the day was her birthday. When I met her, she sat in a
wheelchair. I talked with her for 15 minutes. At first, I could not understand
what she said. Her pronunciation was too difficult for me to understand so I
just looked at her eyes. I could not understand what she said, but I could
understand her mind a little. She felt lonely because nobody visited her. I
asked her where her family was but she could not answer my question. I thought
about my grand mother who died 4 years ago. She looked like my grandmother. When
I said “good bye”, her eyes were filled with eyes. We could not understand each
other, but we communicated with each other. It was a special experience for me.
After this experience, I miss my grandmother more.

"Alternative Weekend in South Bend" - Student Essay
My name is Masatoshi Arita. From February 14th to February 16th, I went to a
homeless shelter in South Bend, Indiana, as a volunteer activity. This is my
memorable activity. I had a really good time. I served meals for people who live
in the shelter, I played bingo game with adults who live in the shelter, and I
also played other games with their children. People who live in the shelter were
very cheerful and friendly. Actually, before I met the people, I heard their
situations from the officer in the facility. They all were in many kinds of
difficult situations. I was really sorry to hear that. It seemed that there was
hopelessness around them. I didn’t know what I should do for them. However, they
looked like they never gave up their lives. I thought that I’d like them to keep
smiling. Smiling makes us happy. While I was there, I saw many smiling faces.
Especially, children’s smiling faces were something. I’ll never forget their
smiling faces. I hope that they keep smiling in the future.
"ELI Ski Trip" - Student Essay
My name is Taro Arai. I went skiing as an ELI event. It was very fun event
because I could enjoy snowboarding. Actually, I had never done snowboarding
before it, so it was a good chance to do that. Moreover, ELI pays for a lift and
renting snowboarding equipments, so I could enjoy without thinking about
expenses. Also, I enjoyed talking with many people who are from other countries
such as Thailand, India, Korea, and the U.S. We talked about a difference
between foreign cultures and my culture, for example some traditional holidays
in Japan and India. We also talked about normal stuff, so I could enjoy a lot of
talking and speaking English.
