Jian Pan
Hello, everybody! My name is Jian Pan. Pan is my family name and Jian is my first name. you can call me Jian. I am optimistic. There is always a smile on my face. I come from China. I just graduated from my high school, so now I am an undergraduate student. My major is business and management. To be a manager is my dream. I will try my best to realize it. But now I have to study language in ELI, which teaches international students English. Because my grammar is good, I don’t need to learn the grammar course; therefore, I can choose one academic course instead of the grammar course. Now I study reading, listening, writing, and calculus courses. I like reading fiction written in my native language, which is Chinese, but I don’t like reading English stories. Short stories, which are full of fun, are my favorite, and I have a lot of books of this kind. I am always happy to share them with friends who like reading too. I hope we can be good friends, no matter whether you like reading or not.
Sangbum Kim
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sangbum Kim. I am from South Korea, and I was born in a city called Busan, which is the second largest city in Korea. I moved to a city called Daejeon when I was in the third grade. Thus, I have lived in that city for twenty three years. I came here to study Music Education. I play trombone as well. I have learned musical instruments including piano, cello, and guitar since I was a child. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I have three years of teaching experience in secondary school in Korea. During the time I was teaching, I realized that I needed to have more extensive knowledge about Music Education. That's why I have decided to study in the United States of America. Now, I’m really enjoying studying with good faculty and friends. Moreover, the programs of music and music education here are awesome. This school makes me eager to study music. I hope I finish my master degree at CMU with good results.
Jae-Seuk Lim
My name is Jae-Seuk Lim, and you can call me Lim. I’m 19 years old, and I came from Seoul, which is the capital city of Korea. I have a father who works for LG Construction, a mother who is a painter, and an older sister who studies education in university. In addition, I live in South Washington apartment M14 now. The reason why I am here is that when I was a high school student, my father recommended that I go abroad to enter a university in the United States. Therefore, after I graduated from high school, I came here to study. I have been here about 4 months, and now, I’m just taking 4 ELI dual classes. My future major is Accounting. After graduated from university, I’m going to get an AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountant) license. I think Accounting is the most important major in Korea. Therefore, I’m going to get the license, and I will be an accountant. I will try to study hard this semester.
Kazuhiko Komatsu
My name is Kazuhiko Komatsu, and my nickname is Kazu. I am from Sendai city in Japan, which is in the northern part of the main island. About one million people live in Sendai, and the city is famous for the Star Festival from August 6th to 8th and for ox tongue. I am a student of the Graduate School of Tohoku University. My major is Information Science, specializing in Computer Architecture and Computer Graphics. Now I am absent from the university and have come to Central Michigan University to learn English. It may be very useful for my research to communicate with a lot of people and acquire various ideas because I am always demanding new ideas in my study. This is the reason why I want to learn English, which is the most common language in the world. My hobbies are snowboarding, drinking alcohol, and cars. I love snowboarding enough to go snowboarding more than 50 times in a season. I also like to hang out and drink alcohol with many friends. Furthermore, I totally love cars. For example, I like to drive, wash, customize, watch, and maintain cars. I hope to see more of you.
Koji Ishida
My name is Koji Ishida, and I am from Japan. First of all, although I have been in Mt. Pleasant for more than one year, my favorite food has not been still changed. It is Japanese food! Every time I eat some American heavy food, I imagine and miss Japanese food such as rice, fish, and fermented soybeans (natto) so much. Therefore, when I go back to Japan, I eat a lot of Japanese dishes that my mother cooks in my home, and I bring lots of Japanese instant food, which I can make easily, when I came back here from my hometown. I know that I will not stop missing Japanese food even if I live in American a long time because I have a love of Japanese food. Next, listening to music is a part of my life. I love listening to hip-hop music and R&B music, and I have a lot of favorite artists in America and Japan. For example, I like Tupac, Nas, and R. Kelly as my favorite American artists. When I came here last May, I bought a Home Theater System, which has five satellite speakers and a subwoofer, and I set it up in my room immediately. As a result, I got a very good surrounding of music in my apartment. Other things that I am interested in are going to the SAC to build up my body, eating until I am satisfied, and sleeping well. In conclusion, I am always happy and comfortable when these things that I stated are satisfied in my life. Although I miss Japanese food, I am happy now because I succeed in getting these things.
Ernesto Valdivieso
I am Ernesto Valdivieso, but my friends call me Cholo; why they call me Cholo is a long story to tell; for these reason I am not going to tell you. I was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1980, but I lived and went to school in Riobamba, a little town 3 hours south from Quito. When I finished high school, I came to Philadelphia as an exchange student; it was a really nice experience. After my exchange year in Philadelphia I went to Valdivia, Chile to study in the university, and I got a degree in Agricultural Engineering with a minor in Cattle Production. I have a lot of hobbies, and I love to do sports; I play many sports such as tennis, soccer, running and kickboxing. Also, when I have free time I like to spend time chatting with my family and friends. I have long and short term goals; in the short term I want to improve my English, get my MSA degree, meet people from the United States, be part of their culture, and learn as much I can. In the long term I want to have my own house, a happy family, and a good job. Those things sound easy to have but sometimes they are not, and you have to fight really hard to get them.
Howon Lee
My name is Howon Lee and I am 42 years old. I have a wife and one son. I was born in South Korea. In my youth, my dream was to be a good architect. I studied architecture in high school. But, after graduating from high school, I changed my major from architecture to public administration because I would like to be a civil servant and public administration is more interesting than architecture. While working as an officer, I hope to be an able servant and make an effort to increase my ability. I am so happy to have a chance to study in CMU, which will give me good opportunities to learn new knowledge. My hobby is jogging and mountain climbing, which keep me healthy and stress-free. I think that exercise is the best way to maintain health. Another favorite hobby is reading history books especially about China, for the history of China is very interesting. Also, I am trying to increase English writing and speaking skills, and the ELI is a good institute for learning English. In conclusion, CMU is a very good place not only to exercise but also to study. I will do my best to attain my goal. Thanks.
Hanna Kim
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Hanna Kim. It’s almost same as the American name “Hannah.” In the U.S., now I’m just twenty years old. Nevertheless, in Korea, I’m twenty two years old, so when I have to say my age, I’m always confused. I really love watching DVDs because I love movies and dramas. I like almost all kinds of movies although that is a documentary film if I’m interested about that. I used to hate romance movie, but now I can watch and enjoy romance movies. My favorite movie is Gladiator. The reason is that was very impressive to me, and I still like to watch this movie even though I saw this movie more than four times. By the way, I’m usually not comfortable with someone who I have never met before or I don’t know well because I’m shy and not good at talking. When I talk with someone who I don’t know well, I feel nervous about what I should say and how I should react to his or her talking. My major is Mathematics, but I don’t like it because Mathematic is too boring and complicated. Thus, when I come back to Korea or transfer to some American universities, I’ll try to change my major. I want to study about psychology or medical science. I really want to be a doctor since when I was junior high school student. However, my entrance examination score was not enough to enter that course. Now, I just plan to improve my English skill and find how I can enter the course about psychology or medical science.
Jing-Jing Wu
My name is Jing-Jing Wu and I grew up in Taiwan. Most of my friends think I am an optimistic, enthusiastic and cheerful person. As a result, it is not difficult to be my friend. Also, I like to help people solve their problems and answer their questions. I usually spend my free time listening and singing my favorite songs, cooking for my lunches or dinners, chatting with my friends, as well as cleaning up and arranging my room. I enjoy inviting my friends to visit me and have a dinner. However, I recently think that I should exercise more, so therefore I attempt to walk at least 30 minutes per day. I am skilled in operating computer, surveying and researching products in a specific market, and developing plans. In addition, I personally have a good organizational ability and communication skills. I applied them in my jobs in the past.
Ohun Kwun
My name is Ohun Kwun. I am from South Korea. I was born in Incheon City in South Korea, and I have lived in Incheon all my life. I got married seven years ago. There are three people in my family: my wife, my daughter, and me. Our family lives together now in Mount Pleasant. I am a public official. I have worked at Incheon City hall in South Korea for twelve years. Lately I was in charge of food recycling in Garage Disposal Management. Food recycling is to use leftover food to produce animal feed. I made a plan, exercised it, and reported the result of it to a Mayor and Council. I will get back to City hall in two years. My major is Master of Public Administration. Public Administration is a science to make a study about government such as federal, state and local government. I work and will work for local governments, so I hope to learn more about state and local government than federal government. My hobby is swimming. I began to swim six months ago. In particular, the reason why I begun to swim is not only because swimming is easy to learn but also because swimming is helpful for my back. I had a backache, but now I feel better than before. I took swimming lessons for four weeks this spring. I like back stroke because it is easy to swim. But I hope to be good at swimming free style, so I tried to swim in free style. I don’t swim very well, but I enjoy it. Swimming is an interesting and useful exercise. In the future I will take part in a swimming contest.
Kae-Dong Choi
My name is Kae-Dong Choi. I am from Suwon city in South Korea. I am married and have two kids, aged 6 and 14 months. My older son goes to elementary school. He cannot speak English well. So I was really afraid whether he could adjust to his school life. Fortunately, he has had a good time at his school until now. My favorite hobby is mountain climbing because it provides me with not only health but also ideal time to reflect on my life. I worked for a Gyeonggi Provincial Government as a Director of Public Relations Planning Team. My job was to inform the public about government activities and services, and to promote public interest in government policies. Through my work experience, I began to feel the necessity for fundamental knowledge and English ability to become a more skilled public servant. I am taking part in the dual program of CMU, studying in the MPA program and the ELI. I am confident that this program will help me to achieve my goals. After the completion of my studies, I will return to my job and serve my country and people.
Tidtaya Sinutoke
My name is Tidtaya Sinutoke, but everyone calls me “Waew”. In Thailand, Waew is a really popular nickname because it means “bright”. Unfortunately, in the US, people pronounce it as “whale”, which means a big fish. My birth date is January 4th and right now I’m 18 years old. I’m a voice performance major; however, I still like to play piano, flute and Thai flute called Klui. I love to sleep as much as I love to practice my instrument. I came to study at Central Michigan University because last year I was an exchange student in Saginaw Heritage High School and always participated in music activities which for some reason were always located in this university. So I decided to continue my education here instead of going back to Thailand. For me, studying music in the U.S. is really helpful for my skills. It gives me an opportunity to understand Western music more. However, even though I’ve been here for a year, my English skill still is not good enough to study in normal English classes like other freshman. So I really hope that this year my English will get much better.
