Lynching Photography at the Museum of African-American History
Today, I went to the African-American museum. I knew that a long time ago
America had a lot of racial discrimination. So black people had a hard life. I
knew
about
that, but what I saw exceeded my imagination. I couldn't read all the
information about Black history, but I saw many pictures in the museum. It was
many Black people who were lynched. They were killed by hanging. Also, I saw
whip and stick. In that time white people hit Black people by whip and stick. I
felt I want to study more about African-American history, because black history
is very sad history but they also have good history. I want to learn about that.
Also I want to learn about discrimination. (Shiori Umezawa)
At the Museum of African American History I saw the exhibition about the
history and legacy of the African American community. African Americans have for
centuries
been aware of their image as an ethnic group. In past times this community
suffered too much because of the White community's misunderstanding, who didn't
have appreciation and even had intolerance and hate against them for being
black. The pictures of black persons burned, hanged from a tree, castrated,
etc., that are showed in the exhibition of newspapers' fragments let me know the
great cruelty expressed by white persons of that time. African Americans had an
array of problems: they were considered as animals, they were slaves, they
couldn't own properties, and the slaves owners had disposal of their lives and
of their families. The damages and outrages inflicted on the Black community
were a method of control by Whites to " keep them in their place ". It was an
era in American history that permitted unspeakable acts of terror and atrocities
against an unprotected segment of its population.
I learned from the exhibit that the good always triumphs over the evil and that
God makes late or early justice. I liked it because through these historical
documents I could realize that the African American community gave us powerful
messages of freedom, justice, courage, with brave black men and women that
risked their lives to stop the violence.
Meet the Students
My name is Sandra Davila. I was born in Lima (PERU) in 1936, my
parents named me Sandra because in that time there was a famous movie where the
heroine was named "Sandra ". I am the second and last daughter of my parents. In
my childhood I had happiest days. My parents loved me and my sister a lot. When
I was twelve years old my uncle gave me a police puppy. I named him Peter and
spent with him marvelous days. When I lost Peter I had the saddest day of my
life. I missed him a lot but little by little I forgot Peter. My sister and me
studied Elementary and High School in a religious private school. Our teachers
were French nuns and all the pupils had an hour weekly of French. I always liked
to read stories and watch movies and TV novels. When I was fifteen years old my
mother died.
Two years later I entered the University to study law, there I had many friends.
I was a good student and had good scores. After I graduated from law school, I
married and had a child. I worked in Sears. In 1996 my father died and in 1998
my husband died. Finally, at present I have foreign clients and I want to learn
English to understand them better and so give them a better service.
My name is Shiori Umezawa. I'm from Japan and I was born on June 14, 1984. I'm 20 years old. I live in Mt. Pleasant. I'm a student and I study English at Central Michigan University. Last summer I came to Mt. Pleasant, and I stayed here for 6 weeks. I had great experience in Mt. Pleasant, so I decide to come back to America to study English. I think my character is sometime positive and sometime negative. After I get shocked, I can't think about anything else. I can't control my mind. Also, I'm a very childish person sometimes. I always depend on other person. I want to become an independent person. I want to mature, and of course learn English too.
