Student Reflections on the Field Trip to Detroit

We went to the art museum in Detroit. My favorite works were Cezanne’s. Her pictures were almost portrait and colored by turbid paints though, some parts showed bright color a little bit and that made the pictures spice nice. It was like sunshine into the forest; the person in silence gets something soft and tender. I felt like being in front of them a long time.--Akemi

On October 20, we . . . [went] to Detroit to visit the art museum and African American museum. I was very happy . . . because the trip impressed me. The Art museum showed us many works both of east, west, modern and ancient arts. It let me feel art always comes from life and has no boundary. At the African American museum, I was shocked deeply. This was first time I clearly knew the history of African American people. There displayed a number of pictures that African American people were lynched and murdered. The phenomenon that they were lynched was really ferocious. I couldn’t image how cold the lives of African American people were. Living in peaceful today, I felt I was so lucky. I wish the tragic phenomenon was only history.--Xuemei

After I visited the African American Museum, I didn’t feel good. The photos showed the truth that Americans afflicted them [Blacks] very cruelly. Several reasons were on the board [about why Americans afflicted Blacks], but I couldn’t agree with them. Before that I thought Africans were afflicted by American just because they were black. But for me the reasons on the board seem to be made artificially . . . Well, yesterday again I learned that I shouldn’t judge people with their appearance.--Kristy

I could see many black people and ruins when we arrived in Detroit. My neighbor Ayako said that Detroit was dangerous, so I was scared. It could be dangerous at night, but I felt it’s not so dangerous at noon or early evening. We visited the Art Museum first. It was a large building, and . . . I could see lots of art there. I felt a so long history. Next, we visited the African American Museum. I felt that I could see the behind of history and sorry sights. I am interested in black people history, so I felt happy because I could visit there, but I also felt sad there... Finally, I was so happy in this trip, and I had fun a lot!! On the return road, I sang songs in Chris's car. My neighbor Ayako was sleeping having a dream then. She must have enjoyed the trip, too...--Koji

Detroit is the biggest city in Michigan, so I always wanted to go there. The weather was not that cold, and my feeling was great. The way to the Detroit, I talked a lot with friends and Lisa, who is one of my teachers, and also took a nap. After about 2 and a half hours, we arrived in Detroit, and had a lunch in Detroit Institute Arts. There were a lot of paintings and beautiful places that we could rest. I took a lot of pictures of me and paintings. The most important thing was that I knew the painter who painted most of paintings in Detroit Institute Arts. He was Frida’s husband. I learned about Frida in E.L.I class, so I could understand about the paintings that he draws easily. It was good trip for me, and I thank teachers for taking care about us.--Min Hwan

I went to Detroit on ELI trip yesterday. Students and teachers got together at lobby at 8 am, and we sat off to Detroit by three cars. I got on Lisa’s car with some other students, and we enjoyed talking on the way to the destination. At first, I had an idea about Detroit was a big city, but actually it was not. We passed 8 mile, which was scene on the movie I watched. After 3 hours of driving, we arrived at the first place which was planned to go, the Detroit Art Museum. As I got into the museum, I went to the cafeteria in there first because I was so thirsty and so hungry enough to be not able to concentrate on watching arts in there. After I was satisfied with good food in the cafeteria, I enjoyed watching arts. However, I couldn’t understand the worth of them at all. Second, we went to African-American museum. It was a museum which the materials of African-American’s history were exhibited. I got a shock when I saw a lot of pictures of black people lynched on the wall. It was a very good experience.--Katsuhisa

21 October 2004 in the early morning, we started Detroit to visit for The Detroit Institute of Arts and America-African museum. During we passed by long road, we can saw flying geese and beautiful autumn. When we arrived on Detroit, it took three hours to get there. The city was so big and gloomy. However, it was interesting to me because I saw 8 mile in the movie and that was really good experience. In the Detroit Institute of Arts, I saw ancient Indians works, other beautiful works and paintings.--Young Geun

Yesterday I went on a trip to Detroit with E.L.I classmates. . . . When we arrived in Detroit, we went the Institute Detroit Museum of Art first. . . . I took a lot of pictures and enjoyed the exhibitions. Finally, we moved to African American Museum. There were a lot of pictures which white people treat African American cruelly. Most pictures showed dead people who had been lynched by white and white peoples who looks like enjoying lynching in pictures. --Sean
